brooch

Fellow clay geek Adriana Christianson has donated a lovely bowl to the Gold Coast Potters Association Empty Bowls 2012 Silent Auction - when she mailed the piece to Queensland, she snuck in a tiny hand painted brooch for me! I nearby provide evidence that I LOVE it and wore it to work today.
[gasp! it's me!]

It reminds me of a Turkish Nazar.

miro feathers.

Last week I posted these photos on Facebook and I am blown away with the positive response. I'm not sure if it's the designs themselves, or the jump into a new style that has caught everyone's attention. Either way, it got me thinking and I returned to some sketchbook work that I started before Christmas - pulling apart the colour sections in my feather designs and simplifying them.

[miro feathers?]

I think I like them...do you?

travel treasures: allysha hurd

Possibly my favourite place on Granville Island, Vancouver: The Gallery of BC Ceramics. I brought this little gem home with me, a rich red stoneware teabowl with a slightly macabre bird design by Allysha Hurd.

hola!

I nearby invite you to a Spanish fiesta of art, sangria, flamenco music and pretty dresses! The Art of Spain group show opens at 19 KAREN on Saturday 9 June, 6 - 8pm and I would LOVE you to come celebrate with me!
It's my very first official group show and I'm rather excited! You can see a preview of the artworks right here.

kris coad studio visit

This post is embarrassingly belated. Not only did I only begin to type this in February, I have left it to MAY to finally publish it. I can't give you a good reason as to why. So here it is!

During my Christmastime visit to Melbourne, I was fortunate enough to meet the astonishingly talented still life artist, Anita Mertzlin, who in turn is good friends with Melbourne ceramicist Kris Coad and arranged a studio visit for me. Cue fan girl moment.

I read about Kris' work in early 2011 in The Journal of Australian Ceramics. Her striking wheel thrown porcelain tableware instantly fascinated me and in March 2011 I was drooling over her Craft Victoria studio visit photos. Need I explain how downright excited I was at the prospect of meeting Kris myself and visiting her studio?

I was in fact, so overcome with awe and excitement, that I could barely string a sentence together. Poor Kris must have wondered what kind of crazy clay junkie she had let into her workspace!

Gasworks Art Park

I feel so honoured to have been given a sneak peak into Kris' work space - I only hope that next time I meet her I will remember to say something comprehensible!

[Massive thanks to Annie, Kris, Sally and Kerry!]

more miro cups

I like to think of myself as an organised person. I keep a diary, I make lists, I set goals. But so often I underestimate how much time I need to complete a project and so end up working right to the deadline.

These cups are, in theory, to be a side project to my Miro dishes in The Art of Spain which opens in 17 days.
Fingers crossed, eh?

Thursday = Mud Colony! Thanks to the marvelous Adriana for her hard work for our little community x

travel treasures: grace lee

Visiting the Craft Council of British Columbia's retail space on Granville Island, Crafthouse, was a real treat. I fell in love with Grace Lee's birch collection.

[this dish is tiny, only 11 cm wide!]
It was also interesting to experience the Canadian equivalent of Australian state peak bodies for art and craft, such as Artisan in Brisbane and Craft Vic in Melbourne.

travel treasures: don hutchinson

Granville Island in Vancouver is packed full of studio potters. This gorgeous tiny bird dish was made by Don Hutchinson, who works out of Kingsmill Pottery Studio.

I landed back on the Gold Coast today, but I think I left my heart on Long Beach last week.
